Girls’ Team from Tver Region will Play for Russia at Street Child World Cup

The Zubtsov girls’ team, representing the Zubtsov orphanage in the Tver region, last Friday celebrated victory in the nationwide women’s qualifier for the Future Depends on You tournament (for girls aged 14-17) arranged by MegaFon. Together with another champion, the Galaktika team from the Smolensk region, the girls will defend their nation’s honor at the first ever Street Child World Cup, to be held in Moscow in May 2018 with 24 participating teams from 22 countries.

MegaFon’s the Future Depends on You football competition has been promoting sport and a healthy lifestyle among orphans from all parts of Russia since 2005, providing new opportunities and opening up new horizons, so that kids can get settled in life and find new parents. Thanks to video interviews recorded together with the Change One Life charity foundation, 458 boys and girls across the country have already found new families. The Russian Football Union, Ministry of Sport, Ministry of Education and Science and Ministry of Foreign Affairs are co-organizers of the championship.

In May 2018, MegaFon and the Save the Children and Street Child United charity foundations will hold the first ever Future Depends on You Street Child World Cup in Russia, giving children from 22 countries a chance to succeed and create their own stories. Today, girls from orphanages and children’s homes from five Russian regions — the Far East, East Siberia, West Siberia, North-West and Central Russia — battled it out to play at the championship.

The tournament participants were chosen based on the results of regional games, and the girls showcased a strong and beautiful game. In the end, the team from the Zubtsov orphanage was vastly superior to the other teams. It won three matches out of four and scored five goals in total. Now, together with the Galaktika boys from the Smolensk region, the winning girls will begin intensive training to prepare for the international competition that will be held in May 2018.

Sofya Berezkova, the winning team’s captain, commented on her impressions of the game: «We liked the competition very much, it was terrific! Lots of emotions! We knew that the strongest teams would participate in the qualifier, we were confident, but still this victory came as a total surprise to us! Now, we will work even harder to get prepared for the Street Child World Cup, so that we can compete successfully with teams from other countries!»

Valeriy Indeev, coach of the Zubtsov team, said: «I always motivate my team that it’s the game that matters, not the result. The most important thing is to play to the full! And that’s what they did. I’m very excited that we’ve won! Of course, the teams at the World Cup will be very serious contenders, but we’ll be fully prepared for battle! There’s lots of room for improvement in women’s football both in Russia and in the world, and we’ll do our best!»
